OEM vs. ODM vs. Private Label: Which Skincare Manufacturing Model Is Right for Your Brand?

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing)

The brand owns the formula IP. Manufacturer produces to exact brand specifications. Not resold to other buyers.

  • Best for: Brands with proprietary formulations, strong IP positions
  • Pros: Full IP ownership; unique products; competitive moat
  • Cons: Higher development costs; longer timelines

ODM (Original Design Manufacturing)

Manufacturer provides formula and design service. Some ODMs offer pre-developed formulations; exclusivity depends on agreement.

  • Best for: Brands without in-house expertise, new category entry
  • Pros: Faster development; manufacturer expertise
  • Cons: Potential IP sharing; formula may not be exclusive

Private Label

Manufacturer’s established formulation rebranded. Same formula may be sold to multiple brands.

  • Best for: Emerging brands, private retailers, clinic brands
  • Pros: Fastest path to market; lowest cost; proven formulations
  • Cons: Limited differentiation; formula not exclusive

Questions to Ask Your Manufacturer

  1. Will this formula be exclusive to my brand?
  2. Who owns the formula IP after development?
  3. Can the manufacturer sell similar products to other clients?
  4. Are regulatory documents transferable if I switch manufacturers?
